Launch Review


The Youth Arts fringe was officially launched on the 25th of April in the Corn Exchange! The evening of art and entertainment was a huge success, and a perfect way to launch the exciting new art trail. It was celebration of the creative talents of young people across the city, and a chance for young people’s services to showcase their fantastic projects. Over 300 people came to see the young people perform and exhibit, filling the Corn Exchange with anticipation.

The evening, compered by young musician Mrisi Makondo-Wills, kicked off with some spectacular music, written and performed by young people from Youth projects DV8 and Audio Active. The audience were treated to a mix of hip-hop, beat boxing and grime. Zeith who put in a spectacular beat box performance said: “It was great, I loved performing for the brilliant crowd and I can’t wait for next year!”

The Bridge between Dance Theatre, also took to the stage with their high-energy body percussion and there was a film preview and a book reading from The Youth Offending Team. Art works from the projects were on display, creating a diverse multi media exhibition. Ru-ok? The young peoples substance misuse service showcased the ‘My life’ photography exhibition, Mac’s Place hung some stunning 3d masks from the ceiling and the YPC displayed an impressive graffiti floor piece. There was also an opportunity to for the audience to leave their mark an in a collaborative grafitti piece.

The event was a great introduction to the creative projects being carried out by young people. Paul, a student of Sussex University said: it’s really opened my eyes to all different activities young people in Brighton are involved in. the show was great and parts of the exhibition were really moving. I’m now sure that I’ll visit some of the youth projects during the festival.’ yaf 015yaf 019
